River & city

Bangkok by its water: dawn alms rounds, a private long-tail through the Thonburi canals, dinner on a converted rice barge.

Day by day

A shape, not a schedule. Every one of these is rewritten around the people travelling it.

  1. Arrive

A room over the river in Bang Rak. Nothing planned but a walk and a first dinner where the city eats.

  2. Dawn on the water

Alms at six, then a long-tail into the Thonburi khlongs — the city that existed before the roads, still living on stilts.

  3. The old town, on foot

Wat Pho, the amulet market, a shophouse lunch. Air-conditioned car meeting you whenever the heat wins.

  4. Chinatown after dark

Yaowarat on foot: charcoal seafood, guay jub, the dessert cart that only appears after eleven.

  5. Out, or on

A last morning at the flower market, then the airport — or north, and the trip properly begins.
